Performance of Comparable Indies

Reviewing the high-performers from the last 8 years of other single-player RPGs has allowed us to outline some reasonable goals. Of the titles shown, when considering art style, length, and gameplay, Sifu is our current lodestar for a successful release and lifecycle of The End of Ardestea. As such, this has informed the following production decisions:

  • Console releases are highly recommended – Xbox, PS5, and Switch.
  • Price point of $39.99, with frequent discount sales at $29.99 – as Steam reports that more users are willing to purchase a game if it is on sale.
  • Target sales of 1M units on Steam can expect to be reflected in equal sales across all console platforms.

Other conclusions can be drawn about the efficacy of an established publisher – by all accounts Aggro Crab “goofed” their way to 500k sales with guerilla marketing on TikTok, where A Plague Tale: Innocence enjoyed the benefit of a long standing IP. Of the titles that were published out of house, unsurprising standouts include Annapurna (Stray, Journey, Outer Wilds) and Panic Inc (Firewatch, Untitled Goose Game). This brings our final two conclusions quite easily:

  • We’ll need to be courting publishers.
  • Without the benefit of an established IP, effective grassroots marketing is a must.

Everyone is familiar with the Collectors-Special-Exclusive Edition of top selling games. Introducing the Support Indie Devs edition - for $59.99 it comes bundled with the OST, Art Book, an exclusive skin, and the undying love of the hardworking devs.
Merchandise
Not just plain logo tees - limited release streetwear inspired by the denizens of Ardestea. An often underutilized area of potential, merch is a market where demand can be met by Etsy, or by us.
Direct Support on Twitch
People love to feel like part of the maker-space, and there's no better platform to blend boots-on-the-ground community building with the ability to support us directly than Twitch. Engagement, subs, and feedback are all worthwhile dividends.
Ad Revenue
Hand in hand with Twitch, a less direct method of generating monetary value as well as moving marketing can be found in the creator tiers of many social media platforms. Having a strong presence on Youtube, Instagram, and TikTok can give us an edge - and a share of millions of dollars in ad revenue.
TTRPG Sourcebook
An homage to where it all started, the Tabletop source book handles the D&D 5E system while introducing monsters on a scale never seen in traditional D&D. A strategic partnership with Kobold Press will allow us to tap into one of the most dedicated markets in the gaming sphere.
